University of Wales Trinity Saint David

About

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is a multi-campus dual sector university with campuses in Carmarthen, Cardiff, Lampeter and Swansea as well as in, London and Birmingham. UWTSD has a clear and exciting strategic plan that places emphasis upon student-centred applied learning, strong academic disciplines and a clear commitment to innovation, enterprise and knowledge transfer.

Challenge

As digital transformation rapidly shifts industries and organisations globally, UWTSD strives to be a leader in education by taking a tech-driven approach to its classrooms and curriculums. Accordingly, the university collaborated with Samsung, and IDNS as the system integration partner, to install the right infrastructure to support the community. UWTSD has successfully digitised its facilities with diverse LCD, LED digital signage and interactive displays. Additionally, the Immersive Space, equipped with Samsung’s LED digital signage, was selected as a finalist for Education Project of the Year at the AV Awards 2023. Subsequently, UWTSD’s education experience has improved and is empowering students’ innovation, collaboration, and engagement.

From the outset of the digitalisation project, UWTSD was looking to create and enhance the learning experience for students and staff. Under the values of excellent teaching, creativity and collaboration, the university decided to deploy wayfinding, digital signage, HyFlex teaching rooms that combine face-to-face and online learning, and educational spaces that support immersive learning. To successfully accomplish just that, UWTSD needed industry-leading display solutions to support the university’s forward-thinking strategy focused on communication and creativity. For efficient installation and maintenance over the facilities, working with reliable experts and establishing long-lasting relationships were also necessary.

“We want to be ahead of the game, and a partnership with Samsung allows us to do that. We’re now able to be more creative, more effective, and respond to increased student needs.”

Dylan Jones, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UWTSD

Solution

UWTSD’s digitalisation project required extensive renovations throughout the campus to meet their goal of offering engaging experiences for staff, students, and visitors. With up-to-date technology on visual display solutions, Samsung was a synergistic partner for the project, providing various innovative products and technical support from experts. UWTSD wanted to harness the power of LED to offer a captivating and engaging classroom experience. The Immersive Room, equipped with 18 meters of the latest Samsung LED screens across three walls, provides unparalleled visuals and immaculate detail that offers fully immersive experiences for students. With an impressive 12K image resolution, the university can push the boundaries on learning through virtual or augmented reality. Whether it be virtual simulations or interactive lessons, the space will stimulate students’ creativity and encourage them to engage with the material in a new and exciting way.

Samsung supported the university during every step of the deployment process, from consulting and installation to technical advice. Its technical support team worked seamlessly with IDNS, sharing professional know-hows on visual display solutions, making the process efficient and straightforward. As a result, Samsung exceeded the project team members’ expectations and gave them confidence as a trustworthy partner.

As a global company with a range of displays, Samsung has brought extensive benefits as a single source supplier. The Samsung ecosystem, including hardware and software, along with its versatile portfolio of display products, enabled UWTSD to create educational spaces in accordance with the university’s intention seamlessly. In addition to the Immersive Space, learning areas like HyFlex rooms with interactive display Flip and crystal UHD signage help students become active participants and are encouraged to interact with the curriculum in a more meaningful, memorable way.

“Through the Immersive Space, we are able to revolutionise the way students learn, by providing them with an interactive, engaging, and memorable educational experience that brings the curriculum to life. We are excited to be at the forefront of this innovative approach to learning.”

James Cale, Director of Digital Services at UWTSD

By introducing various displays throughout the campus, UWTSD was able to build its own infrastructure that allows students to explore and learn about subjects and concepts that would be otherwise difficult or impossible to replicate in a traditional classroom setting. Its state- of-the-art education spaces are now progressive learning facilities that transform the education experience for students, teachers, and administrations alike. With best-in-class technology and expert support, Samsung played a crucial role in creating a space for students to enhance their learning experience and motivation for the future.
